Oh Deer

It seems that the Word file that contained all my reviews had disappeared. Yes, I had a Word file that I used to always open when I had to write reviews. It had a ready template and everything.

I'm so sad to see it gone. I'm just glad that I had the chance to save the last several reviews. I don't remember why I did that, really. Maybe I felt a tiny, bad feeling? The only problem is that the last review was unfinished. And I hate writing reviews twice.

Ah well, things go bad in life. But anyway, I must go write this review. I'm sort of procrastinating right now because I'm announcing this sort-of-bad-news. Well, folks. Wish me luck!

Ballads of Suburbia
by Stephanie Kuehnert

Ballads are the kind of songs that Kara McNaughton likes best. Not the cliched ones where a diva hits her highest note or a rock band tones it down a couple of notches for the ladies, but the true ballads: the punk rocker or the country crooner telling the story of their life in three minutes, the chorus reminding their listeners of the numerous ways to screw things up.

In high school, Kara helped maintain the "Stories of Suburbia" notebook, which contained newspaper articles about bizarre and often tragic events from suburbs all over and personal vignettes that Kara dubbed "ballads" written by her friends in Oak Park, a suburb of Chicago. Those "ballads" were heartbreakingly honest tales of the moments when life changes and a kid is forced to grow up too soon. But Kara never wrote her own ballad. Before she could figure out what her song was about, she was leaving town after a series of disastrous events at the end of her junior year.

Four years later, Kara returns to face the music, and tells the tale of her first three years of high school with her friends' "ballads" interspersed throughout.

Currently reading the book above! The epilogue didn't quite catch my attention...but I'll have to wait and read the rest of the book to see.

The Summer I Turned Pretty
by Jenny Han

Some summers are just destined to be pretty.

Belly measures her life in summers. Everything good, everything magical happens between the months of June and August. Winters are simply a time to count the weeks until the next summer, a place away from the beach house, away from Susannah, and most importantly, away from Jeremiah and Conrad. They are the boys that Belly has known since her very first summer -- they have been her brother figures, her crushes, and everything in between. But one summer, one wonderful and terrible summer, the more everything changes, the more it all ends up just the way it should have been all along.

Friday's Finest (22)

HAPPY FRIDAY, everyone! Even if it doesn't feel like Friday anymore for me. School is out for the summer!

Friday's Finest is a new meme hosted by Steff & Justine from A Bookful of Thoughts.

Rules:

~Post a quote that really stuck to you after reading it in a book.
~Make sure it isn't a spoiler!
~If you'd like, expand on what you think it means and why you chose it.

We are the ones who take this thing called music and line it up with this thing called time. We are the ticking, we are the pulsing, we are underneath every part of this moment. And by making the moment our own, we are rendering it timeless. There is no audience. There are no instruments. There are only bodies and thoughts and murmurs and looks. It's the concert rush to end all concert rushes, because this is what matters. When the heart races, this is what it's racing towards.

Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist by Rachel Cohn & David Levithan

For such a short story, this novel certainly has some pretty great quotes! This one is one of my favourites. The description is poetic and has a rhythm of its own and I just adore it.

Justine's Thoughts: Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater

Shiver
By Maggie Stiefvater

Pages:

390

Book Description:

For years, Grace has watched the wolves in the woods behind her house. One yellow-eyed wolf—her wolf—is a chilling presence she can't seem to live without. Meanwhile, Sam has lived two lives: In winter, the frozen woods, the protection of the pack, and the silent company of a fearless girl. In summer, a few precious months of being human ... until the cold makes him shift back again.

Now, Grace meets a yellow-eyed boy whose familiarity takes her breath away. It's her wolf. It has to be. But as winter nears, Sam must fight to stay human--or risk losing himself, and Grace, forever.

Books are more real when you read them outside.

Any thoughts:

What a fantastic, heartbreaking tale! Maggie Stiefvater creates a world in which I would most definitely like to live in. Werewolves, passion, friendship and mystery. All in all, it’s one heck of a novel that you must read!

I’ll start with the writing. I can simply describe it in one word - beautiful. The way Stiefvater describes the scenery captures my heart because I’m the type to appreciate nature through photography. The fact that she also included a character who loves photography made me so very happy. Because of Stiefvater’s writing, I was able to feel the characters and their emotions, especially Sam. He’s an emotional character who can think of lyrics at the top of his head. He’s so poetic and great that I often found myself swooning over him.

Sam and Grace...They are one amazing couple. Since the chapters switch narration between Sam and Grace, we are able to understand both sides of the relationship, which is why I just love them so much! They have tons of memorable moments together and I would smile and squeal every time.

The plot had me at hello. I already knew from the very start that I was going to love this novel. Though I have never read a story about werewolves, I’m certain that I will be reading more of them. Stiefvater’s take on werewolves is something that is unique, however, which is a very good thing, as I was fully engrossed. They are sad creatures, but I would have to say that they are my favourite creatures (out of the fantasy world).

The ending is enough to satisfy me though I am still curious as to what actually happened. But I would recommend reading this book all the way. It is now one of my favourites and I absolutely can’t wait to read Linger!
