Wuthering Heights
by Emily Brontë

"Wuthering Heights", Emily Bronte's only novel, is one of the pinnacles of 19th-century English literature. It's the story of Heathcliff, an orphan who falls in love with a girl above his class, loses her, and devotes the rest of his life to wreaking revenge on her family.

(I never realized before how many book covers there are for Wuthering Heights!)
I'm buying this for school, actually. I'd rather have a copy of my own than borrow the school's copy. I'm so excited to read it!

The Lovely Bones
by Alice Sebold

When we first meet 14-year-old Susie Salmon, she is already in heaven. This was before milk carton photos and public service announcements, she tells us; back in 1973, when Susie mysteriously disappeared, people still believed these things didn't happen. In the sweet, untroubled voice of a precocious teenage girl, Susie relates the awful events of her death and her own adjustment to the strange new place she finds herself. It looks a lot like her school playground, with the good kind of swing sets. With love, longing, and a growing understanding, Susie watches her family as they cope with their grief, her father embarks on a search for the killer, her sister undertakes a feat of amazing daring, her little brother builds a fort in her honor and begin the difficult process of healing. In the hands of a brilliant novelist, this story of seemingly unbearable tragedy is transformed into a suspenseful and touching story about family, memory, love, heaven, and living.

Steff read the book already and she's lending me her copy. We watched the movie this weekend, but Steff doesn't remember the book very well so...I guess it's up to my opinion! Although she did say that the movie was depressing. I thought it was beautifully depressing. There's a difference.

Leftovers
by Laura Weiss

Blair and Ardith are best friends who have committed an unforgivable act in the name of love and justice. But in order to understand what could drive two young women to such extreme measures, first you'll have to understand why. You'll have to listen as they describe parents who are alternately absent and smothering, classmates who mock and shun anyone different, and young men who are allowed to hurt and dominate without consequence. You will have to learn what it's like to be a teenage girl who locks her bedroom door at night, who has been written off by the adults around her as damaged goods. A girl who has no one to trust except the one person she's forbidden to see. You'll have to understand what it's really like to be forgotten and abandoned in America today.

Are you ready?

  4. Err, well, I actually bought Wuthering Heights... after I read Twilight, lol. It's still sitting on my shelf from 7th grade, hm. I bought it with a few Jane Austen books, which I devoured in two days, but when I started Wuthering Heights, I just couldn't bring myself to finish it. I'll be wondering what you think of it! (And I can't see the cover, but you wouldn't have gotten "Edward and Bella's" version, would you?)
As for the Lovely Bones, I didn't finish it before the due date came around from the library, hehe. There's a HUGE difference between depressing and beautifully depressing books; the first makes me feel suicidal, the latter just makes me cry. I'm glad you enjoyed the movie though!
For Leftovers, the summary definitely sounds interesting, and it makes me wonder what Lara Weiss's view of society now is like. What exactly did those girls do? :o

ANYWAYS, sorry for the SUPER long commentary and happy reading! :D

I did read Wuthering Heights. Maybe I was too young but I just didn't get it.

The Lovely Bones has been on my TBR stack for quite a while. I need to be in a certain mood before I'll grab it.
