Daily Dose (2)

This meme is new and is hosted by Holly from Good Golly Miss Holly. I personally think it's a great idea. For one, it spreads the idea of photography, which inspires others to do the same. And the goal of this meme is to get you through the week by posting inspirational images. I've collected tons of these so it's only right if I share the ones I saved with you. :)

Friday Fill-Ins (4)

Friday Fill-Ins is a weekly meme hosted by Janet at Friday Fill-Ins.

1. Wait! Wait, don't forget to finish reading Along for the Ride and Macbeth!

2. The end of the song was followed at once by hysteric shrieks among the crowd.

3. The trouble is he's the president. (No, I'm not talking about Obama).

4. As I am writing this, someone is turning to ice many miles away.

5. With a faint pop, the gum covered her face, showing only her inflamed cheeks.

6. Yesterday was shadowy and ominous. It was raining as well...

7. And as for the weekend, tonight I'm looking forward to sleep, actually, tomorrow my plans include going to the dentist and watch a movie and Sunday, I want to finish all my homework!

Justine's Thoughts: The Breakup Bible by Melissa Kantor

The Breakup Bible
By Melissa Kantor

Pages:

265

Book Description:

High school junior Jennifer Lewis has it all: amazing friends, a coveted editorial position on the school newspaper, and the perfect relationship with senior Max Brown, her editor in chief and the boy of her dreams. Then, out of nowhere, Max casually tells Jennifer that maybe “it would be better if we were just friends,” and the world comes to a screeching halt.

Shocked, Jen can’t imagine how she’s supposed to get out of bed every morning much less face Max across a conference table at meetings for The Hillsdale High Spectator. And when her grandmother gives her The Breakup Bible, a self-help book that claims its “commandments” can make her “the happiest dumpee on the block,” Jen is convinced that the humiliation of heartbreak might actually be fatal. In fact, she’s sure there’s been a mistake -- she and Max aren’t really . . . over.

But as spring semester rolls around, and Jen finds herself on the trail of a controversial feature story, she starts to see Max -- and herself -- in a whole new light. And Jennifer discovers there just might be life after heartbreak.

A quote:

Is there a Web site called dreamscometrue.com? If so, this moment deserved to be the home page.

Any thoughts:

Well, I thought this book was really good. For one, Jennifer is a great heroine. The way she narrates the story can hold your attention because she’s funny, real, smart and deep. She can also be relatable for those girls who ever felt like they can never let go of the ones who dumped them. Jennifer clings to Max for what seems like forever and that’s what it actually feels like for her. She claims that it takes such a long time to go from “heartache to happiness”.

I also liked how Melissa Kantor inserted the controversial issue of race in high school and how she tackled it dead on in the end. This is what makes this read a little less on the fluffy side and more on the serious side, which is more of a reason why it’s a must read.

There’s drama, of course. What novel, which is based on breakups, does not have drama? None that I can think of. But I like it the way it’s used - realistic and reasonable.

Overall, this novel is the perspective of a girl, who is trying to go through a breakup while using The Breakup Bible that claims to have everything you need to follow to get over it. Along the way, she’ll stumble upon an idea for an article, play matchmaker for her one of her friends, and possibly even go on a blind date. What more could you ask for? I say you read this soon.

New layout!

I thought I might as well change the layout to get into the spirit of Winter...so, here it is! A layout featuring...snow!

The photo in the header was taken by Alison at Deviantart. Isn't it pretty?

And also, I chose the background at the very last minute. I had the header prepared before I had a background. Bad idea. So I had my planned background first and then uploaded the header...but it looked horrible! It didn't match whatsoever. Then I stuck to this one because it matched the header the most. I couldn't find anything else so I hope it looks fine. Or does it look like there's too much going on?

Oh, I don't know. I guess I'll just leave it and come back to it in mid December...for a Christmas-themed layout! :)

Here is the previous header & background:

Justine's Thoughts: The Twilight Saga - New Moon

It may contain a few spoilers, but if you read it, you'll be safe. Not much is revealed.

Yeah, yeah, here goes another New Moon review. I'm doing this not because everyone else is writing reviews about it, but because I want to look back at my thoughts later in the future, to see what my opinion was when I saw it....just in case I forget. :D

So I just saw it today with my mom, two days after the movie was released. I was not surprised to see many people in the theatre. In fact, the one we were supposed to go to was sold out. Luckily the one after that was only 30 minutes away, so all we had to do was wait. The theatre was full of people of different ages and the ones sitting near us were young children. The girls on the right side of me were in their teen years, which was just great because they reacted how I expected them to react, although it was less worse (thank goodness). The downside was that this one girl sitting nearest to me would often snort (at Edward! I know, right?) and place her legs on the empty seat beside me so it would make this noise that would bug the jitters out of me. Other than that, the rest of the people were actually quiet. O, happy day!

Anyway, onto the movie.

It had me at hello, to say the least. The beginning captured me with the effects so I was already amazed when it started. The landscapes -- fields, Italy, mountains, cliff, etc -- were really breathtaking. I loved the way it was filmed.

One thing I adored the most is that they stayed really true to the book. I was pointing out to myself the parts they got from the book and I found myself cheering! It made me happy, haha. Oh and there were some laugh-out-loud parts, which I thought were fantastic. Charlie continues to make me laugh.

The actors were indeed much better. Even though we get less Edward and more Jacob, I was fine with it. I think I found a new respect for Jacob; I felt really sorry for him at some parts. Taylor Lautner is a growing actor and he is the best Jacob ever. I loved his stunts! And Bella -- wow. You could literally feel the pain she was going through. I think the breathing sounds that she was making helped. You could tell she was hyperventilating and you could feel the emotion. Kristen Stewart is awesome, in my honest opinion. I love her as Bella. And finally, we come to Edward. Sometimes I couldn't comprehend what he was saying (same goes with Bella). All I heard were mumbles (which is why when the DVD is out, I'm going to get it, pronto!). But anyway, the sparkles have improved! And the Volturi scene? Jaw-dropping. There sure is more action in this movie and it was very intense.

Speaking of the Volturi, Dakota Fanning proved me wrong. When I first heard the news that she was going to be Jane, I doubted she could do it. But boy, Dakota Fanning was astonishing! She was fierce and that is just how I imagined Jane would act.

There were also a few scenes in which Victoria appeared. It still is sad to think that Rachelle Lefevre won't be in the next one. That is one of the things I feared most -- character switches in the middle of the movie series. But I hope Bryce Dallas Howard does a good job. I've never seen her act, so I'm not sure what to think yet.

I thought the wolves were pretty cool. Their roars, as they vibrated through the whole theatre, felt real, like you're actually watching them right in front of you. Remember seeing Jacob transform into a wolf in the trailer? Seeing it in the theatre is so much better!

Lastly, the ending. It's a cliffhanger! I saw it coming but I still had my hand up to my mouth in shock. Still, I had mixed feelings about it. I understand why they would do that because it's a movie series and all...but where is the ____ I was looking for?!? Now I'm wondering how Eclipse is going to start off...

Oh curiosity, why dost thou torture me?!

Overall, I enjoyed it fifty times more than Twilight. It really is worth the wait and the money.

The 2010 Support Your Local Library Reading Challenge

This is my second challenge I'm participating in for the upcoming year! It is hosted by J.Kaye at her book blog. To find more about the details on how you can join, click here.

Since most of the books I read are from the library, I decided to give this challenge a try. It lasts throughout the whole year from January 2010 to December 2010. Right now I'm aiming for the Just My Size level - 50 books. If I reach more than that, that would be awesome, but I'll be taking it step by step. No pressure :)

Thanks to this challenge, my curiosity will soon be satisfied.

It is hosted by J. Kaye at her book blog. To read about the details of this challenge and if you are interested in participating, click here.

Along for the Ride
by Sarah Dessen

It’s been so long since Auden slept at night. Ever since her parents’ divorce—or since the fighting started. Now she has the chance to spend a carefree summer with her dad and his new family in the charming beach town where they live.

A job in a clothes boutique introduces Auden to the world of girls: their talk, their friendship, their crushes. She missed out on all that, too busy being the perfect daughter to her demanding mother. Then she meets Eli, an intriguing loner and a fellow insomniac who becomes her guide to the nocturnal world of the town. Together they embark on parallel quests: for Auden, to experience the carefree teenage life she’s been denied; for Eli, to come to terms with the guilt he feels for the death of a friend.

And no more worrying about keeping her deep, dark secret hidden.

Sparrow makes a new best friend and has her eye on an irritatingly appealing guy in her history class. She feels like she's well on her way to a normal life. But it's another boy—a dead one—who wants Sparrow's attention, and he won't let her be till she's helped him Move On.

You see, Sparrow Delaney's secret is that she's a psychic. And there's one very persistent ghost who won't let her forget it.

If I Have a Wicked Stepmother, Where's My Prince?
by Melissa Kantor

Mrs. McBloom, clean up your room!"For nearly fifty years, that's been the refrain of janitors, principals, and students who enter the chaos of Room Five. Now the beloved Mrs. McBloom-who has taught nearly everyone in the town of Up Yonder, even Principal Pumpernickel-is about to retire. Finally, she must clean up her classroom. But where to begin? Years of science experiments have left all kinds of critters hoppin' and cluckin' and flyin' around. Giant sunflowers droop over desks; vines with fat green beans climb the walls; and a full-grown apple tree grows smack-dab in the middle of the floor. There are more books stacked in Room Five than in the Up Yonder Library. And who knows what else lurks in the piles of papers or the lost-and-found box?

The Vampire is Just Not That Into You

The Beautiful Between
by Alyssa B. Sheinmel

Release Date:
May 11, 2010

Description:

If high school were a fairy-tale kingdom, Connelly Sternin would be Rapunzel, locked not in a tower by a wicked witch but in a high-rise apartment building by the SATs and college applications—and by the secrets she keeps. Connelly's few friends think that her parents are divorced—but they're not. Connelly's father died when she was two, and she doesn't know how.

If Connelly is the Rapunzel of her school, Jeremy Cole is the crown prince, son of a great and rich New York City family. So when he sits down next to her at lunch one day, Connelly couldn't be more surprised. But Jeremy has a tragic secret of his own, and Connelly is the only one he can turn to for help. Together they form a council of two, helping each other with their homework and sharing secrets. As the pair's friendship grows, Connelly learns that it's the truth, not the secrets, that one must guard and protect. And that between friends, the truth, however harsh, is also beautiful.

This lovely and memorable debut by Alyssa B. Sheinmel contains many of the hallmark themes found in young adult literature—friendship, coming of age, finding a place to belong, and overcoming the death of a loved one. Emotionally moving from start to finish, The Beautiful Between introduces a strong new voice to the genre, a voice with a long future ahead of it.

Wow, this sounds deep. I'm so looking forward for its release! And the cover...it's just beautiful :)

Justine's Thoughts: The Midnight Twins by Jacquelyn Mitchard

The Midnight Twins
By Jacquelyn Mitchard

Pages:

235

Book Description:

Merry tried to stop herself from looking at Mallory, fearful of what she would see twisting in her twin’s eyes. But she could feel Mally’s thoughts hammering at her mind like fists.

---

One twin has the power to see into the future, one to see deep into the past. Only they can put a stop to the threat that looms over their small town. That is, if their powers don’t tear them apart first.

A quote:

“...the heart knows when things are right that seem wrong to everyone else.”

Any thoughts:

I must say that I liked it, however, it took me a while to get into it. After that, it was the suspense that kept me turning the pages non-stop, curious to read about what would happen next.

The twins discover their gifts in this book, and use them to prevent something from happening. I could tell that isn’t the end of the twins’ story, that there will be another book following this one. So I’ll definitely keep an eye out for it. And I just found out that it’s only the beginning of the series, which means...there’ll be more.

Anywya, you’d think some twins are similar, but the Brynn twins are very different. Judging from their personalities, it isn’t hard to tell them apart. Merideth Brynn is the outgoing twin and the social cheerleader while Mallory Brynn is the athletic twin, the one who doesn’t socialize as much as Merideth. Also, what I found interesting was the twins’ language they used ever since they were little. Such words they mentioned were: “Laybite” and “Siow”.

I like the intriguing plot. That’s one of the things that made me continue because I’ve never read a novel about twins before. I’m enjoying it thus far. And it’s well-written, I noticed. It’s in third person omniscient so we get to read about other characters’ thoughts, which is pretty cool.

The cover looks really interesting to me and it matches a plot that involves twins. There’s a mirror of the picture of a girl, the moon, and the darkness...I like it.

18-year-old Lainey Pike can tell you everything you need to know about the people in her family just by telling you how they died. Her reckless stepfather drove his motorcycle off the highway and caused the biggest traffic jam in years. Her long-suffering grandmother lived through cancer and a heart attack before finally succumbing to a stroke. And Lainey's mother, still devastated over her husband's death, hung herself in the basement just days after Lainey's high school graduation. Now Lainey's five-year-old brother is an orphan and her estranged older sister moves back home to act as his guardian. Dealing with her brother has always been a struggle, but sharing the responsibility with her sister is proving to be just as challenging.

Lainey knows that this is all her mother's fault, but she also knows that she eventually has to move out of the "anger" phase of the grieving process. What she can't figure out, though, is how to make peace with a dead woman.

Justine's Thoughts: Two Way Street by Lauren Barnholdt

Two Way Street
By Lauren Barnholdt

Pages:

Book Description:

This is Jordan and Courtney, totally in love. Sure, they were an unlikely high school couple. But they clicked; it worked. They’re even going to the same college, and driving cross-country together for orientation.

Then Jordan dumps Courtney -- for a girl he met on the Internet.

It’s too late to change plans, so the road trip is on. Courtney’s heartbroken, but she figures she can tough it out for a few days. La la la -- this is Courtney pretending not to care.

But in a strange twist, Jordan cares. A lot.

Turns out, he’s got a secret or two that he’s not telling Courtney. And it has everything to do with why they broke up, why they can’t get back together and how, in spite of it all, this couple is destined for each other.

A quote:

He takes the last bite of his burger and licks his lips again. Can he STOP DOING THAT? Really, how much can one person lick his lips?

Any thoughts:

  • This novel, I swear to you, got me smiling from beginning to end, laughing and giggling over the silliest things, crying during the sad parts and rooting for Courtney and Jordan. It’s one of a kind, this novel. And I truly loved it!
  • First off, it’s written in Courtney and Jordan’s points of views. In addition to that, it goes back to the past every other chapter so you get to read about how they met and understand the secret Jordan’s been hiding. They’re very different characters, but I love them together.
  • There’s a lot of swearing, just to warn you. It most often comes from a character named B.J., Jordan’s best friend, but the way he talks always makes me laugh. I think he’s got to be my favourite character in the novel. He’s the comedic relief.
  • The plot is very original. I haven’t heard of a story like this one so it got me intrigued the moment I read the description.
  • I noticed that a lot of the characters do a lot of analyzing. For example, Jocelyn (Courtney’s best friend) would tell Courtney why it’s a bad thing to be dating Jordan, and also Courtney, for thinking about what she should act like so that Jordan wouldn’t think she’s mad at him for breaking up with her. You know, those kinds of things. It’s not bad; I just think it’s interesting because I do the same thing. Haha.
  • Needless to say that I read this book in a few hours - 4 hours and a half, to be exact - this book was honestly hard to put down. I just didn’t know when to stop! I did once, actually, but that didn’t work out. After ten minutes, I picked it up again and continued from there. I’m telling you, it was hard.
  • Oh, and the cover! I love it - the colour, the setting, the car and everything! From the picture, you can only see the girl, but the back of the book shows the front half of the car with its hood up, and a guy trying to fix something. It’s pretty neat and I really like it. I’d give it 5 stars, the cover I mean. ;)
  • I don’t know what else to say...other than I enjoyed it a lot and that I’m looking forward to read other novels by Lauren Barnholdt.

In My Mailbox (2)

In My Mailbox is held weekly by Kristi at The Story Siren. Click here for the details on how to participate.

This week, I've only got two books! I'm trying to cut down the number as I've been having difficulty trying to read in a short period of time. It's not summer, anymore and I can't read for the whole day! How I wish I could, though.

Being Nikki (2nd book in the Airhead series)
by Meg Cabot

Emerson Watts was pretty sure there couldn't be anything worse than being a straight A student whose brain had been transplanted into the body of a teenage supermodel.

But it turned out she was wrong.

Because that supermodel could turn out to have a mother who's mysteriously gone missing, a brother who's shown up on her doorstep demanding answers, ex-boyfriends crawling out of the woodwork who want more than just a photo op, and a British heartthrob who's written a song about her that's topping the charts.

How can Em balance all that with school, lingerie runway shows, and weekend jaunts to St. John—especially when she's got final exams; a sister who is headed to the high school cheerleading championships; a former best friend, Christopher, who's intent on destroying Stark Enterprises to avenge the death of his lost love; and a company she represents that seems to be turning to the dark side...

But then, nobody said it was going to be easy, being Nikki.

*This one is STILL in the library....waiting for me to pick it up in the requested shelf.*

Justine's Thoughts: The Last Days by Scott Westerfeld

The Last Days
By Scott Westerfeld

Pages:

286

A quote:

When the last days come, they will come quickly.

Any thoughts:

  • I searched for this book in Scott Westerfeld’s website...but I can’t find it anywhere! I mean, it’s a sequel to Peeps, so it would only make sense if The Last Days was on that same page. I don’t know, I just don’t get it.
  • Now, I understand. This is taken from Scott Westerfeld’s site: “Just to remind you, The Last Days is my not-really-a-sequel to Peeps. It’s set in the same parasite-afflicted New York City, but instead of the Night Watch, it follows a bunch of kids trying to start a band and get famous.” Anyway, I won’t give the rest away because it may spoil some things.
  • There is some “fact goodness” before each chapter in the novel, which had sparked my interest as always. I love me some pieces of information.
  • One more thing I love is how it’s written in different points of view. Five, to be exact. They’re all in first-person. And the thing is: each character has a different style, so you instantly recognize who is narrating. It’s the same in Peeps: Luce always says “dude” a lot, and she’s fierce, in my opinion. In The Last Days, a new character - Zahler - says “fawesome” and “fool” instead of “cool”, Pearl says “nine/all kinds of...”, and etc. You get the point. It’s just really interesting how Scott Westerfeld gives each character a signature.
  • Music in The Last Days is described so beautifully, that I found myself rereading the same paragraph more than twice. Of course, it helps too that one of the characters hallucinates sometimes. Still, it’s like you can picture the music notes floating in the air, reaching out and affecting the audience. Music really is a big part of the story, but I can’t say why since that’s a spoiler.
  • One thing I was excited to read about was the characters from Peeps coming back! That’s right; two characters appear in the novel towards the end and I was trying to read slowly to...capture that moment, haha. I just love them, that’s all.
  • Overall, I really enjoyed Peeps and The Last Days. They don’t really seem like the typical vampire books you read about these days. But that’s okay, originality is a good thing. Plus, you can learn a lot about parasites and evolution.

Waiting on Wednesday is hosted by Jill from Breaking the Spine.

Of All the Stupid Things
by Alexandra Diaz

Release Date:
December 22, 2009

Description:

It really was a stupid thing that Brent Staple did – doing it (so the rumour goes) with Chris Sanchez, one of the guy cheerleaders. Who’d have thought that Brent, the school’s hottest jock, could be gay? But the doubt about Brent doesn’t just hurt Tara – it’s the beginning of the end for an inseparable trio of friends. Tara’s training for the marathon, but also running from her father and her fear of ever being abandoned again. Beautiful Whitney Blaire’s got everything and nothing, because her parents have never had time for her. And Pinkie has a compulsive need to mother everyone to make up for the mom she never stops missing. The girls couldn’t be more different, but doesn’t that just prove the strength of their friendship?

Then new-girl Riley arrives in school, wafting her long black hair and a scent of lilacs. Suddenly, Tara starts to feel things she’s never felt before for a girl - and to reassess her feelings about Brent and what he may/may not have done. Is Tara gay – or does she just love Riley? And can the map of her deepest friendships ever be redrawn in a post-Riley world?

Justine's Thoughts: Peeps by Scott Westerfeld

Peeps

By Scott Westerfeld

Pages:

304

Book Description:

Okay let’s clear up some myths about vampires. First of all, you won’t see me using the V-word much. In the night watch, we prefer the term parasite positives, or peeps for short.

The main thing to remember is that there’s no magic involved. No flying. No transforming into bats or rats either. We’re talking about a disease.

---

After a chance encounter with a mysterious woman one night, Cal Thompson’s life is changed forever. He’s been infected with an insidious parasite. The good news: he’s only a carrier -- still sane, without the worst of the symptoms. The bad news: he’s infected all his former girlfriends -- and now they’ve turned into what Cal calls peeps. The rest of us call them vampires. And it’s Cal’s job to hunt hem down before they create even more of their kind. . . .

A quote:

Welcome to the wonderful world of parasites.
This is where I live.

Any thoughts:

  • A wonderful novel. It reminds me of Uglies, Scott Westerfeld’s series of novels, which I’ve read ages ago and now I don’t remember anything about it other than it was a Sci-Fi novel. So is Peeps. But it’s written differently. Every other chapter it goes on to explain a few facts and it is quite interesting to know all about parasites, really. I cringed at least once because I don’t know anything about parasites and reading about how they function, where they’re found, what they do, the effects they cause...well, let’s just say that I’ve never thought about that.
  • I love the plot of this story even though the end will make you feel like it is unfinished. That’s why a sequel to Peeps was created. It begins with how Peeps was finished...so it makes sense, but it’s focused on other people.
  • While reading the novel, I realized how much I missed the action. There’s action in this story, which I really love, and it’s just been so long since I started reading novels with action in it. It’s awesome, just to let you know. Scott Westerfeld knows how to brilliantly describe super cool moves.
  • And the characters. They’re great. Cal is the one telling the story and also the one to explain the cool facts about parasites and evolution. The others - Lace, Dr. Rat, Manny, Sarah, Morgan (and there’s a bit more you get to read about) - are interesting, but I just wish the novel was longer so I got to know them better. I felt that the time sped by (in the novel) when he talked to the characters. But anyway, all in all, the characters are amazing. I love Lace ;)
  • That’s about it. Coming up next is The Last Days, the sequel. Oooh. I’m on it.
