Teaser Tuesday (46)

Teaser Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by Should Be Reading.

From page 506 of "Summer at Willow Lake"
by Susan Wiggs

Then she looked at the laughing faces of her father and brother and realized the reason didn't matter. Sometimes it was enough just to be happy, for nor reason at all.

Totally just finished this book. One thing I have to say is: don't judge this one by its cover. The story is superb and amazing. *sighhh*

On a blogging note, you might have noticed I've sort of somewhat disappeared. My laptop is getting soooo hot. Did I mention it functions seasonally? In winter, my laptop feels cold. In spring and autumn, it gets slightly warmer. And in summer, it is scorching hot. Now it's starting to feel like summer, so right now as I type, my hands are burning. At least that's what it feels like.

School is also approaching an end. I'm trying so very hard to keep on task and maintain my grades and everything. But summer is not far away! I can feel it at the tips of my fingers! And it's tempting me. Often, I'd catch myself daydreaming in class, which I believe is not a good thing, my friends.

Ooh, and speaking of school...prom was absolutely GRAND. I had an enormous amount of fun dancing with friends. Oh gosh, the food was deeeelish. I didn't want to eat much because I knew I was going to dance afterwards, but boy, did I want to! The dessert was even better (chocolate cheesecake with marshmallows on top covered with caramel). It tasted like heaven.

ANYWAY. This turned out to be a huge post! I guess I had to cram in all what I had to say for the past few weeks. It's been busy, guys, it's crazy. I hope you're all doing well yourselves. I haven't been commenting much and I'm so sorry! You might see me every now and then though. I'm always on twitter, which is where I may post my prom pictures if you're interested. So I'll talk to you guys soon! :)

The Secret Year
by Jennifer R. Hubbard

What do you think about when you can't sleep? Sometimes I think about the ocean. I can see it lapping on the shore, waves rolling in one after the other, washing over the sand, never stopping. That's what usually puts me to sleep.

---

I've tried this once and it actually put me to sleep. So does the sound of rain. But when those don't work, I imagine blank whiteness on paper. I've been told to do that once when I had so much struggle sleeping one night that I stayed up until freaking 4 AM and had to get up at 6 AM. It works now though! :D

Justine's Thoughts: Revelations by Melissa de la Cruz

Revelations (Blue Bloods #3)
By Melissa de la Cruz

Source: Library
Pages:
256
Rating: 5/5
A quote:

Tonight the world is yours, as am I.

Any thoughts:

Ah, I understand why this book in the series is called “Revelations”. We finally get some answers! Not all of them, but enough to satisfy my curiosity. And with revelations come total shock and surprise, such as Jack and Schyler, Bliss’s nature and Grandfather Lawrence.

It felt like this was the very beginning of the series, where things happen and things start to get real interesting. Take, for example, the battle between the Blue Bloods and Silver Bloods. It has just begun and Revelations ended with its beginning. It’s about to get dirty in the next novel, I’m sure.

Schyler gets irritating often. She doesn’t know what to do (I admit, I wouldn’t know either), which has its certain consequences. She treats her best friend, Oliver, like crap (though I understand why) even though he doesn’t deserve it. All in all, let’s just say she’s in a huge mess right now.

The writing is once again intelligent and magnificent, and the plot unpredictable and fascinating. I want more of it, and certainly will be reading the next book soon.

Waiting on Wednesday is hosted by Jill from Breaking the Spine.

Glow
[Sky Chasers #1]
by Amy Kathleen Ryan

Release Date:
September 27, 2011

What if you were fifteen, bound for a new world, about to pledge your life to someone you’d been promised to since birth, and one unexpected violent attack made survival – not love – the issue?

Out in the murky nebula lurks an unseen enemy: the New Horizon. On its way to populate a distant planet in the wake of Earth’s collapse, the ship’s crew has been unable to conceive a generation to continue its mission. They need young girls desperately, or their zealous leader’s efforts will fail. Onboard their sister ship, the Empyrean, the unsuspecting families don’t know an attack is being mounted that could claim the most important among them…

Fifteen-year-old Waverly is part of the first generation to be successfully conceived in deep space; she was born on the Empyrean, and the large farming vessel is all she knows. Her concerns are those of any teenager – until Kieran Alden proposes to her. The handsome captain-to-be has everything Waverly could ever want in a husband, and with the pressure to start having children, everyone is sure he’s the best choice. Except for Waverly, who wants more from life than marriage – and is secretly intrigued by the shy, darkly brilliant Seth.

But when the Empyrean faces sudden attack by their assumed allies, they quickly find out that the enemies aren’t all from the outside.

Glow is the most riveting series debut since The Hunger Games, and promises to thrill and challenge readers of all ages.

I am loving the dystopia thing and the fact that it takes place in space. If it mentions The Hunger Games, then I am very, very curious! And I'll be waiting anxiously for it!

Justine's Thoughts: Pretty Little Liars by Sara Shepard

Pretty Little Liars (Pretty Little Liars #1)
By Sara Shepard

Source: Library
Pages:
286

Rating:

5/5

Book Description:

Everyone has something to hide--especially high school juniors Spencer, Aria, Emily, and Hanna. Spencer covets her sister's boyfriend. Aria's fantasizing about her English teacher. Emily's crushing on the new girl at school. Hanna uses some ugly tricks to stay beautiful. But they've all kept an even bigger secret since their friend Alison vanished. How do I know? Because I know everything about the bad girls they were, the naughty girls they are, and all the dirty secrets they've kept. And guess what? I'm telling. ----A

A quote:

When someone covets something they desire and lust over it. Usually it's something they can't have.

Any thoughts:

Surprising, but I actually quite like it. In fact, I love it. I’ve seen the previews from the Pretty Little Liars show on ABC Family but never gotten around to watch it. I thought it looked...blah, nothing special. A while later, I read a review by Melissa at I Swim For Oceans. I was convinced enough to go try and read the book. And then now, voila! I love it! See, this is what happens when you judge things on their appearance -- you miss something good. I’ve clearly learned my lesson.

All four girls have something big to hide. Before their separation, Alison was the one person who they could confide in, the all-powerful leader in the group. But that was also before she disappeared. Now, in junior year high school, the girls have been getting mysterious emails and messages about their secrets which each girl all shared with Alison alone. And they’re all signed by “A”.

In the very beginning, all girls were introduced together. It made it hard to distinguish them from one another, but the story then follows each girl after their separation, making it much easier. There was never a dull moment. Whether it is a steamy gossip or a shocking revelation or a hyped-up party, I was all ears (erm...eyes). There is always something happening to each girl, with enough suspense for me to breathe. I was so, so curious to discover who “A” is. Is it Alyson -- the girl who was claimed to be missing for a long time, the only one who knew all of the girls’ secrets and would never dare tell anyone? Or is it someone else entirely? Well, I don’t know. I haven’t found out yet, which is why I must read the next book in the (long) series immediately. I can totally see why this can be addicting!

Justine's Thoughts: Fire Study by Maria V. Snyder

Fire Study (Poison Study #3)
By Maria V. Snyder

Source: Library
Pages:
448
Rating: 5/5
A quote:

Then you certainly are real. A real pain in the ass, but that’s who I fell in love with.

Any thoughts (Vague details ahead):

I was so sad to see this series end. Fire Study is such a fantastic conclusion that it brought tears to my eyes. Although for the most part, it didn’t feel like the end. But I must say that the ending was very satisfying.

The whole series sucked me in...and the result? I felt like I was living within the story, following Yelena and her exciting life. It is incredible, especially whenever Valek comes into the story. I would feel whatever Yelena would feel and before I know it, a wide grin has been plastered on my face. The series had built a strong bond with me that I respond just like Yelena when a crisis comes upon her.

In Fire Study, you can see perfectly how much Yelena has matured and developed. Now she’s a leader who leads her comrades -- the exact opposite from her helpless position under Reyad’s power. As always, however, she attracts herself to trouble (I think it’s a natural thing). Her troubles turn into long travels and adventures, where action and suspense are most present.

I still believe that Poison Study was the best out of the trilogy. Its plot was one of a kind, while I feel that Magic Study and Fire Study share more similarities (lots and lots of action!). Maybe it’s because Yelena hasn’t discovered her hidden ability yet in Poison Study. Or maybe it’s because the chemistry between Yelena and Valek was just starting to reveal itself. But all the three combined make a spectacular series. I could keep reading this series and never get sick of it. It’s that good. So if you haven’t started Poison Study yet, well, you must!

Justine's Thoughts: Twenty Boy Summer by Sarah Ockler

Twenty Boy Summer
By Sarah Ockler

Source: Library
Pages:
290

Rating:

5/5

Book Description:

“Don’t worry, Anna. I’ll tell her, okay? Just let me think about the best way to do it.”
“Okay.”
“Promise me? Promise you won’t say anything?”
“Don’t worry.” I laughed. “It’s our secret, right?”

***

According to Anna’s best friend, Frankie, twenty days in Zanzibar Bay is the perfect opportunity to have a summer fling, and if they meet one boy every day, there’s a pretty good chance Anna will find her first summer romance. Anna lightheartedly agrees to the game, but there’s something she hasn’t told Frankie--she’s already had her romance, and it was with Frankie’s older brother, Matt, just before his tragic death one year ago.

A quote:

Every story is part of a whole, entire life, you know? Happy and sad and tragic and whatever, but an entire life. And books let you know them.

Any thoughts:

Wow, this is a debut novel and it is amazing. Sarah Ockler’s writing is beautiful and comfortable and poetic. It simply flows. The beauty of that is you can feel everything she describes: the ocean water, the warmth of the sun, the grainy sand, and the wind. It’s breathtaking and real. So is the plot as well as its characters, whose different sides are all revealed.

What made me near tears were the memories and the flashbacks with Matt in it. Knowing that he’s dead and he won’t come back while reading through the reminiscences, I could almost feel what Anna is feeling. And it was really, really sad. Add to that the promise that she has made with Matt, and how she has sworn to keep that promise. She is a special character, though a typical teenager dealing with peer pressure, parties, and boys. Her best friend, Frankie, is such an enjoyment. The things she says will crack you up. It’s never a dull moment with characters that love to talk.

It is needless to say that this novel is bittersweet (in a good way, of course). There are times when you feel the need to cry and then laugh the next. The balance is just perfect. So I would totally recommend this whether or not it’s summer because it’s about the jewels of life: friendship, family, love, and faith in ourselves.

And to throw it in there I just want to say: I feel like flying to California and going to the beach to look for sea glass. That would be splendid.

Lola and the Boy Next Door
by Stephanie Perkins

Release Date:
September 29, 2011

In this companion novel to Anna and the French Kiss, two teens discover that true love may be closer than they think.

For budding costume designer Lola Nolan, the more outrageous, the outfit—more sparkly, more fun, more wild—the better. But even though Lola’s style is outrageous, she’s a devoted daughter and friend with some big plans for the future. And everything is pretty perfect (right down to her hot rocker boyfriend) until the dreaded Bell twins move back into the house next door.

When the family returns and Cricket—a gifted inventor and engineer—steps out from his twin sister’s shadow and back into Lola’s life, she must finally reconcile a lifetime of feelings for the boy next door.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. Okay, so I finished Anna and the French Kiss the other day (I have yet to review it, which I guarantee will be fun to do). And my final say is that it is holyfreakingamazinglikeallkindsofsexysquealygoodness! Yeah, I'll further elaborate on that in the review. After I finished the book at 3 AM, I stayed up a bit because I couldn't sleep with my heart squeezing and all. Then I took the extra time to look up the companion novel. Woo! So exciting! Now I'm just wondering how this will be tied to Anna and the French Kiss. I guess we will just have to wait for September to come. Torture!

Also, on a non-related book note, tomorrow is my prom! I've been MIA for the past few weeks because everything has been crammed lately. And this will probably mean I'll be MIA again for this weekend, although I might come back by the end of it (Victoria Day on Monday!). So basically I have a 5-day weekend. What a temporary vacay! If only I was going prom camping or prom cottaging... For now, I hope you enjoy reviews. :)

Justine's Thoughts: Wings by Aprilynn Pike

Wings
By Aprilynn Pike

Source: Library
Pages:

Rating:

4/5

Book Description:

Laurel’s life is the very definition of normal . . . until the morning when she wakes up to discover a flower blooming from her back. As it turns out, nothing in Laurel’s life is what it seems. Now, with the help of an alluring faerie sentry who holds the key to her true past, Laurel must race to save her human family from the centuries-old faerie enemies who walk among them.

A quote:

It didn't matter to her that Tamani only had weak magic, he was magic.

Any thoughts:

This is my very first fey novel. Before, I had no background of faeries whatsoever. Now, I have a small clue of what they are, even though Aprilynn Pike has added her own spin of ideas.

The plot is original and interesting overall. Not to mention charming and magical. Everything changes significantly for Laurel. The hidden world she belongs to is slowly revealed, but for me it took me a while to get into the story. It’s written in third point of view, which is okay, but sometimes made me bored because of the tone. The characters, on the other hand, are all wonderful. Laurel is weak at times due to the helplessness that she feels when a flower is blooming on her back. Not only that, but her mind fails to remember anything that happened when she was a baby. At other times, she’s confident and strong willed, taking action when she’s not supposed to. I must admit that I adore her during those times. It’s these kinds of heroines that I like.

The love triangle in this novel reminded me of the one in Twilight. David and Tamani are similar to Jacob and Edward, but there’s a whole different thing going on, with mixed up characteristics. That made it harder for me to choose. Up to now, I still have no idea. David is the handsome, sweet, understanding boy, a science nerd who is ever so willing to help Laurel. Tamani is the gorgeous, enticing faerie who holds the answers to Laurel’s past. (He even has a British/Irish accent!) Poor Laurel, who is stuck in the middle of both worlds, torn with an important decision. But truly, I love both guys!

I’m excited to read the sequel, of course. Once I’m in a series, it’s tough to hold back. Wings is definitely a great start in the series and it has much potential. I recommend it to those who love mythology and fantasy, or those who simply want a fun, adventurous story with faeries and magic.

Justine's Thoughts: After Summer by Hailey Abbott

After Summer (Summer Boys #3)
By Hailey Abbott

Source: Library
Pages:
163
Rating: 4/5
Book Description (from Goodreads):

As the leaves turn golden, everyone's favorite beach girls are dealing with romantic dramas in their respective hometowns... Everything comes to a head at an eventful Thanksgiving, and the four cousins come away wiser about life and love.

A quote:

Kelsi talked about growing apart as if it were inevitable. No blame. No fault. Just what happened, like autumn after summer.

Any thoughts:

For a change, the story is told during school after summer is spent. But it still revolves around the usual Tuttle girls.

While it isn’t the best one in the series, it’s still rather enjoyable. The girls experience new things, meet new guys and begin to change. The drama and the hook ups never stop.

The downside to this book is -- I’m feeling less interested in the series after reading it. I am, however, going to finish this series. But not just yet. I feel that I can wait a while before reading the very last one. Although I’m eager to find out how the story of the Tuttle girls ends, I somehow have the patience to wait a little longer. Maybe until summer...which is always the perfect time to read these books.

Justine's Thoughts: Blood Promise by Richelle Mead

Blood Promise (Vampire Academy #4)
By Richelle Mead

Source: Library
Pages:
503
Rating: 5/5
A quote:

Love wasn’t a fling in a back room at a party. It was something you lived and died for.

Any thoughts (Vague spoilers ahead):

Rose is set on a journey to do the one thing she thought she’d never have to do -- but has to. In a book so thrilling and suspenseful, it’s all up to Rose with this one promise she’s made with herself.

It just keeps getting better and better. I had thought that the previous book was my favourite, but if I could have more than one, this would be it! My emotions were running on high all the while. At some times, I didn’t know what to feel. Whether it was shock or sadness or relief -- it was crazy! It was the same with Rose, as she was experiencing conflicting emotions. But I had to admire her for getting through a time of vulnerability with such courage and determination. She’s such a kickass heroine. And I could absolutely say that in every VA novel because it’s true every time.

There are new characters and revelations in this book -- a family that I really enjoyed, a grandmother so strange but clever, a man that goes by the name of Zmey, and a couple who has surprising abilities. Although Rose isn’t fully at St. Vladimir’s, a part of her is, and there were still the old characters I love most : Lissa, Christian, Adrian, as well as some new ones...

The ending brilliantly gave way to an arising plot that I’m dying to get into. But I must wait again for the perfect opportunity to read Spirit Bound, the next book. After all, I don’t want this series to end. So I’m going to just try and relish each moment. The key word being try, because it is such an impossible wait!

Borrowed (from Sarah):

Summer At Willow Lake by Susan Wiggs

---

Hehe, another book borrowed from Sarah! She knows how I love romance and the giggly feeling when there's a good romantic part. She strongly recommended this one, although it's not one I would usually go for at first glance. Yes, the cover's the first thing I see. It's also an adult book. But from the first page and from what Sarah has described, it sounds like a Sophie Kinsella book!
You know, the funny heroine who gets into the silliest of all situations and then falls for the gorgeous guy? I absolutely love those!

This book is part of a long series, actually. We'll see how it turns out. It's a summer book *squeal!* which is making me even more excited for summer, too.

Hope you're all enjoying the great weather out there and have a fabulous weekend :) For me, it's busy times. Once again.

The barrier within the people in this book evidently separates the rich from those from "the flats". Each have their own claimed territory as well as strong opinions about the opposite side. This quote is a glimpse of what it's like outside this barrier, how your background is only a part of you when you get out there. Who you are as a person is what matters and is what people seek first.

Justine's Thoughts: Twenties Girl by Sophie Kinsella

Twenties Girl
By Sophie Kinsella

Source: Library
Pages:
435
Rating: 5/5
Book Description:

Lara Lington has always had an overactive imagination, but suddenly that imagination seems to be in overdrive. Normal professional twenty-something young women don’t get visited by ghosts. Or do they?

When the spirit of Lara’s great-aunt Sadie -- a feisty, demanding girl with firm ideas about fashion, love, and the right way to dance -- mysteriously appears, she has one last request: Lara must find a missing necklace that had been in Sadie’s possession for more than seventy-five years, and Sadie cannot rest without it. Lara, on the other hand, has a number of ongoing distractions. Her best friend and business partner has run off to Goa, her start-up company is floundering, and she’s just been dumped by the “perfect” man.

Sadie, however, could care less.

Lara and Sadie make a hilarious sparring duo, and at first it seems as though they have nothing in common. But as the mission to find Sadie’s necklace leads to intrigue and a new romance for Lara, these very different “twenties” girls learn some surprising truths from each other along the way. Written with all the irrepressible charm and humor that have made Sophie Kinsella’s books beloved by millions, Twenties Girl is also a deeply moving testament to the transcendent bonds of friendship and family.

A quote:

The worst thing a girl can do is trail after a boy when a love affair is dead.

Any thoughts:

Oh gosh! I’ve been a huuuuuge fan of Sophie Kinsella for a long time. I miss reading her novels and that escape-y feeling I get when reading them. And as always, I cried my eyes out, laughed like a lunatic, and giggled like the hopeless romantic I am. That’s what Sophie Kinsella’s novels do to me. This one was no exception.

Initially, I thought Lara seemed like a vulnerable heroine who always finds herself lying to get out of situations so she could fix them while panicking every single second. Yes, it was quite annoying and sad at the same time, especially with her amusing obsession with Josh, the supposed “perfect” man. When she meets Sadie, her life goes on for a crazy ride. Lara learns numerous things from Sadie -- some outrageous, some from the 1920s, and some with a bit of wisdom. In this, Lara changes and comes to terms with things such as her business, her best friend, and Josh, taking responsibility more like a mature adult...although she always has her funny moments.

Sadie, Lara’s great-aunt who appears to her as a ghost in her twenties, is quite the rebel. She’s determined and forceful and likes to interfere. A lot. She can be annoying as well, with her shrugs and waves and oh-well looks. Oh, but my heart goes to her. She’s a ghost who likes to scream in people’s ears to “hypnotize” them, and she has such a captivating history involving a lover and a painting.

All in all, it was a fun, riveting book. Lara’s new romance is just a subplot but it was enough to satisfy me and give me the giggles. Lara and Sadie grow to become attached to one another, and although I’ve read books that deal with the paranormal, Twenties Girl definitely has a unique take on it, with family and friendship issues. Sophie Kinsella wrote it with her awesome, famous style and I’m always going to be a huge fan.

Saiorse Ronan will star in The Host

Remember The Lovely Bones movie? It was based on a novel by Alice Sebold. And do you remember who starred the main character, Susie? Yes, that girl. Her name is Saiorse Ronan.

And guess what! She's going to play Melanie Stryder in another book-to-movie adaptation, The Host by Stephenie Meyer!

Who knew it would take this long to
start casting for the movie? Seriously, I've been waiting for this for years. I'm so delighted that they're starting to cast people. And they made a great choice casting Saiorse.

You may know Saiorse from Atonement, The Lovely Bones, I Could Never Be Your Woman, or even from the recent movie Hanna...One thing for sure is that she's a freaking good actress. I love her. I'm so happy that she was casted. I would have preferred her for Wanda (or Wanderer) but I can't be picky now, can't I? But nevertheless, I'm ever so glad.

Now I'm just curious about who they will cast for Ian and Jared. More than curious, I'm frightened. I'm hoping they get someone good.

How about you guys? What do you think about Saiorse playing the character of Melanie? Any ideas about who they should cast for Ian and Jared?

Justine's Thoughts: Next Summer by Hailey Abbott

Next Summer (Summer Boys #2)
By Hailey Abbott

Source: Library
Pages:

Rating: 3/5
Book Description (from Goodreads):

Three girls. Too many boys. One tempting summer. Things are heating up again. Can you handle it? The SUMMER BOYS girls are back on the beach for another dose of sizzling drama. Find out all this--and much more--in this sexy sequel.

A quote:

The fact is, feelings are gonna be hurt here. You just have to figure out how you can make yourself happy, and you should be honest about it. That’s really what matters.

Any thoughts (No major spoilers):

The Tuttle girls are back for another crazy summer! This time, it’s Kelsi instead of Jamie, who’s off spending her summer at a writing camp, but Beth and Ella are still here. It’s a new summer for each girl, as they try to deal with the situations they’ve landed themselves in.

Beth is the character I like most. She has a difficult situation, yet I was able to go through what she is thinking, even in third person. Ella has sworn in the beginning of the summer that she would change for the better and commit herself to only one guy. A deep part of herself is revealed, one that not many get to see. Kelsi, Ella’s sister, is spending the summer before she goes to college, and she is on her way to figure out who she is, as well as develop the relationship she has with her sister.

I find that I like this book better than the first. There are circumstances which many, many girls can refer to in the relationships they’re in. It is mostly based on summer romances, similar to the first book, but they can also happen to anyone at anytime. Beneath the fashion, the glam, the tans, and the steaminess, there are the important lessons and experiences to be learned. Of course, there’s drama and lots of tears, too. For some reason, I just can’t stop reading the books in this series.

My Internet has been on a roller coaster ride lately so I'm having trouble getting posts up when they're suppose to be up. I should schedule some posts juuuust in case and I just wanted to let you all know. :)
