Leftovers
by Heather Waldorf

Description:

I make it to the flagpole second to last. No Poo Patrol for me. Not today. Today I draw the Grooming straw. Forget my own grooming; for three leisurely hours this morning, I''ll be washing, drying, fluffing and brushing out the matted and dirt-encrusted coats of a dozen-odd dogs of questionable parentage. Not that my own parentage is anything to brag about.

Fifteen-year-old Sarah Greene''s father-chef by day, camera buff by night-choked to death on a piece of steak. It was the best day of Sarah''s life. But a year later, Sarah still struggles with the legacy of her father''s abuse. While other girls her age are determined to find boyfriends and part-time jobs and dresses for the prom, Sarah is on a search-and-destroy mission: to find the shoe box containing her father''s collection of kiddy porn. After a brief skirmish with the law, Sarah is sentenced to do community service hours at Camp Dog Gone Fun, a summer program for shelter dogs. With the love of a big goofy dog named Judy, the friendship of Sullivan, a guy with problems of his own, and the support of a few good adults, Sarah begins to understand her past and believe in a brighter future.

Rage: A Love Story
by Julie Anne Peters

Description:

Johanna is steadfast, patient, reliable; the go-to girl, the one everyone can count on. But always being there for others can’t give Johanna everything she needs— it can’t give her Reeve Hartt.

Reeve is fierce, beautiful, wounded, elusive; a flame that draws Johanna’s fluttering moth. Johanna is determined to get her, against all advice, and to help her, against all reason. But love isn’t always reasonable, right?

In the precarious place where attraction and need collide, a teenager experiences the dark side of a first love, and struggles to find her way into a new light.

Geek Magnet
by Kieran Scott

Description:

Mean Girls meets High School Musical from the author of I Was a Non-Blonde Cheerleader!

Everyone loves KJ Miller, especially the geeks. She’s pretty, smart, and super nice to everyone, which has made her the geek pied piper of Washington High. If only Cameron, the star of the basketball team, would follow her around and worship her the way her dorky entourage does.

As the stage manager of the spring musical, Grease, KJ has to deal with a few geeks, but she also gets to hang out with Tama, queen of the popular crowd and star of the play. Tama has the solution to all of KJ’s problems: get cruel. After all, the nice girl never gets the guy. Can KJ actually pull off a transformation into a mean girl?

Shug
by Jenny Han

Description:

Shug is clever and brave and true (on the inside, anyway). And she's about to become your new best friend.

Annemarie Wilcox, or Shug as her family calls her, is beginning to think there's nothing worse than being twelve. She's too tall, too freckled, and way too flat-chested. Shug is sure that there's not one good or amazing thing about her. And now she has to start junior high, where the friends she counts most dear aren't acting so dear anymore -- especially Mark, the boy she's known her whole life through. Life is growing up all around her, and all Shug wants is for things to be like they used to be. How is a person supposed to prepare for what happens tomorrow when there's just no figuring out today?

Justine's Thoughts: Perfect Nightmare by John Saul

Perfect Nightmare
By John Saul

Pages:

365

Book Description:

When Lindsay Marshall mysteriously vanishes from her bedroom during the night, her mother, Kara, fears the worst. Their neighbour Patrick Shields can easily relate to Kara’s grief -- he is still dealing with the pain of losing his wife and two children in a devastating fire. But heartache isn’t all that draws Patrick and Kara together. He, too, senses the hand of a malevolent stranger in this strategy. And as more people go missing, Patrick’s suspicion, like Kara’s, blooms into horrified certainty. Someone is trolling this peaceful community -- undetected and undeterred -- harvesting victims for a purpose no sane mind can fathom. Kara and Patrick, alone and desperate, are determined to unmask the monster who even now is watching, plotting, keeping a demented diary of unspeakable deeds. . .and waiting until the time is ripe to make another fateful move.

A quote:

All she wanted to do was slip into that blissful unconsciousness where there was no pain, no fear, no terror, where nightmares were something from which she would awaken...

Any thoughts:

  • John Saul certainly knows how to tell a story with such words that can make you cringe. The plot itself was enough to make the hair on the back of my neck stand on end, especially when I read the diary entries the “monster” had written. Boy, that was creepy, but this is one of the things why Perfect Nightmare is such a great thriller/suspense novel.
  • It’s the first one I’ve read, to be honest. I never really bothered to try and pick one out, but once I saw a review about it, which outlined how great of a novel it is, I decided to give it a shot. Then after I read it, I was glad I did because this is so good, I want to keep reading more of John Saul’s books, which are also of the thriller/suspense genre. So I should definitely keep that in mind.
  • One of the thoughts I had throughout the novel was “Poor, Kara.” It was difficult to understand what she was feeling, what she was going through and how she could possibly cope with the situations she was in. But she doesn’t give up; she’s determined to find her daughter, because she believes she’s still out there, somewhere. The dreams she have keep her hopeful. It was like there was a connection between her and Lindsay that keeps her hopes up.
  • The psychopath...or the “monster”, as he was described, is really that - a psychopath. A sexual psychopath who hunts for his victims undetected so he could take them to a “children’s playhouse” and do awful things to them. His diary entries will make you shudder, as I’ve said before, because of the reasons for his doings. They’re just so horrible and insane.
  • There’s an unexpected twist at the end of the novel, which is when the monster is unmasked. Of course, I’ve been trying to figure out who it was the whole time. And once only did the actual character popped in my mind. I was never really sure, though, because it couldn’t be. However, once things were explained, it all made sense.
  • Written in third person through the eyes of different characters in each chapter, this book will keep you turning the pages, just to, you know, take a tiny peek. But really, it’s a page turner, one that’ll be difficult to put down.

Justine's Thoughts: She's So Money by Cherry Cheva

She’s So Money
By Cherry Cheva

Pages:

290

Book Description:

Maya has always been the good girl. Camden is the popular jock with a bigger ego than brain. Maya never thought there’d be a reason for them to, like, interact. But when the biggest mistake of her life lands her in need of a seriously devious plan, she discovers Camden isn’t as dumb as he looks. And now that Maya’s playing the bad girl (lying, cheating, swindling, and, um, shopping), she might as well do it right and flirt with the bad boy. . .

A quote:

If you ever wanted to know what hope, plus dread, plus Tootsie Pop tastes like coming back up, the answer is sour Gummi worms. Gross, but true.

Any thoughts:

What a novel! I really loved this one. The humour, the plot and the characters were all amazing! Maya was one heck of a heroine. Most of the time I felt sorry for her for having to do such... deceitful things. But her humour is one of a kind! I enjoyed her way of telling the story the whole time. This novel also made me squeal for the right reasons. Romance isn’t really the main thing here - I think - but without it, the plot wouldn’t work out. It has to be included. And it was included very successfully. A+, Cherry Cheva!

One more thing: This book was the most relatable book I’ve ever read! It’s because Maya comes from an Asian family, and they say the exact same things as mine! Maya’s academic goals, too, matched mine. Her behaviour almost matched mine (except for the bad things she’s done of course, haha). In other words, Maya’s my long lost twin!!!

I usually add about a dozen to my TBR list. Here's a preview of a few of them and as well as the songs I've heard this week:

Identical
by Ella Hopkins

Description:

Do twins begin in the womb?
Or in a better place?

Kaeleigh and Raeanne are identical down to the dimple. As daughters of a district-court judge father and a politician mother, they are an all-American family- on the surface. Behind the facade each sister has her own dark secret, and that''s where their differences begin.
For Kaeleigh, she's the misplaced focus of Daddy's love, intended for a mother whose presence on the campaign trail means absence at home. All that Raeanne sees is Daddy playing a game of favorites -- and she is losing. If she has to lose, she will do it on her own terms, so she chooses drugs, alcohol, and sex.

Secrets like the ones the twins are harboring are not meant to be kept- from each other or anyone else. Pretty soon it's obvious that neither sister can handle it alone, and one sister must step up to save the other, but the question is- who?

Far From You
by Lisa Schroeder

Description:

Lost and alone...down the rabbit hole

Years have passed since Alice lost her mother to cancer, but time hasn't quite healed the wound. Alice copes the best she can, by writing her music, losing herself in the love of her boyfriend, and distancing herself from her father and his new wife.

But when a deadly snowstorm traps Alice with her stepmother and newborn half-sister, she'll face issues she's been avoiding for too long. As Alice looks to the heavens for guidance, she discovers something wonderful.

Perhaps she's not so alone after all...

Justine's Thoughts: Prada & Prejudice by Manda Hubbard

Prada & Prejudice
By Manda Hubbard

Pages:

238

Book Description:

Callie falls head over heels - literally!

Callie is tired of being a clumsy geek-girl. So during a school trip to London, she buys her ticket to popularity, a pair of real Prada pumps. But then she wobbles on the cobblestones, trips in her too-high heels, and conks her head. When she comes to, it’s the year 1815!
Luckily she meets kindhearted Emily, who mistakes Callie for a long-lost friend. Sparks soon ignite--of the nice and not-so-nice variety--between Callie and Alex, the handsome but totally arrogant Duke of Harksbury. Too bad Alex seems to have something sinister up his ruffled sleeve...
Can Callie save Emily from a dire engagement, win a kiss from Alex, and prove to herself that she’s more than just a loud-mouth klutz before her time in the past is up?

Any thoughts:
  • I don’t know what to think of this one, really. I didn’t love it, but I thought it was quite enjoyable, maybe more suitable for younger ages.
  • Callie’s a great heroine, don’t get me wrong. I just felt that she was childish...in a way. She would make remarks that I’m not used to reading. Or maybe it’s just me...I’m not really sure.
  • The plot was what interested me. You don’t normally get to read about a person going centuries back into the past. I also like what Callie learns about her little trip: that she should stand up for herself and not care about what other people think. That’s a lesson to be learned for everyone.

Justine's Thoughts: Sisters in Sanity by Gayle Foreman

Sisters in Sanity
By Gayle Foreman

Pages:

287

Book Description:

“Where are they taking me?”
“It’s for your own good, Brit,” Dad said.
I was shoved into a small, stuffy room, and the door was locked behind me. I waited for my dad to realize he’d made a terrible mistake and come get me.
But he didn’t.

---

For sixteen-year-old Brit Hemphill, it’s hard to know who she can trust. Convinced she’s out of control, her father has sentenced her to Red Rock: a center for supposedly rebellious teens, where the therapy consists of name-calling and the girls who get privileges are the ones who rat out their peers.

But then Brit meets V, Bebe, Martha, and Cassie - four girls who keep her from going over the edge. Together, they’ll hold on to their sanity and their sisterhood despite the bleak Red Rock reality.

A quote:

“It’s just that we’d like to think that craziness and sanity are on opposite ends of an ocean, but really they’re more like neighbouring islands.”

Any thoughts:

• This is the first novel by Gayle Forman I’ve ever read, and I have to say that I completely loved it from beginning to end. I’ve also heard great things from her other book If I Stay, which I still gotta read soon. And that’s a must.
Red Rock is a horrible place. It’s supposed to positively affect the lives of young women who were sent because they were insane, queer, and suicidal or had gender issues and eating disorders (etc), which they didn’t; Red Rock just likes to over-exaggerate.
• At first, Brit struggles, just like every girl there does. But that changes when she meets four other girls. They bond to create a “club” - Sisters in Sanity - and they hold meetings at night in order to talk freely without anyone watching them. Holding on to each other through thick and thin, they strive to survive Red Rock until they plan to do something about closing down the place.
• The letters from Jed (yes! Romance!) also kept Brit from giving up and suffice it to say that she was close to giving up at times, especially in the end. That’s all I’m going to say.
• The plot really captivated me. It’s the main reason why it was difficult to stop turning the pages. I’ve never read anything like it before. It was full of things I never thought was good enough to read (I’ve always thought themes like these were “boring”. Boy, how wrong was I.). Speaking of the themes, it’s a book full of hope, fear, friendship, life, teen issues, love (!), and trust.
• I would recommend this to everyone, so you can understand what true friendship really is. And plus, it’s dedicated to “misunderstood girls everywhere”. So...why not, right? ;)

Friday Finds (1)

Friday Finds is held weekly by MizB at Should Be Reading. The following are what I've found this week that have captured my interest, whether it be book or a song:

Unreleased Book:

Stop Me If You've Heard This One Before
by David Yoo

Release Date:
March 2, 2010

Description
(from David Yoo's website):

If Albert Kim has learned one thing in his tragic adolescence, it's that God (probably a sadistic teenaged alien) does not want him to succeed at Bern High. By the end of sophomore year, Al is so tired of humiliation that he's chosen to just forget girls and high school society in general, and enjoy the Zen-like detachment that comes from being an intentional loser.

Then he meets Mia Stone, and all the repressed hormones come flooding back. Mia, his co-worker at the Bern Inn, is adorable, popular, and most intimidatingly, the ex-long-term girlfriend of Ivy-bound, muscle-bound king of BHS and world class jerk, Ryan Stackhouse. But -- chalk it up to the magic of Al's inner beauty -- by the end of a summer vacuuming hotel rooms and goofing off together, he and Mia are officially “something.”

Albert barely has time to ponder this miracle before the bomb drops: Ryan has been diagnosed with cancer, and he needs Mia's support, i.e. constant companionship. True, he's lost weight and he’s getting radiation, but that doesn’t make him any less of a jerk. And to Albert, it couldn't be more apparent that Ryan is using his cancer to steal Mia back.

With the whole town rallying behind Ryan like he’s a fallen hero, and Mia emotionally confused and worried for Ryan, Al’s bid for love is not a popular campaign. In fact, it's exactly like driving the wrong way on a five-lane highway.

Or perhaps it’s a small decaf soy sugar-free hazelnut caffe latte? Some might call you a yuppie.

Seventeen-year-old barista Jane Turner has this theory that you can tell a lot about a person by their regular coffee drink. She scribbles it all down in a notebook and calls it Espressology. So it’s not a totally crazy idea when Jane starts hooking up some of her friends based on their coffee orders. Like her best friend, Em, a medium hot chocolate, and Cam, a toffee nut latte. But when her boss, Derek, gets wind of Jane’s Espressology, he makes it an in-store holiday promotion, promising customers their perfect matches for the price of their favorite coffee. Things are going better than Derek could ever have hoped, so why is Jane so freaked out? Does it have anything to do with Em dating Cam? She’s the one who set them up! She should be happy for them, right?

The Body Finder
by Kimberly Derting

Release Date:
March 16, 2010

Description:

Violet Ambrose is grappling with two major issues: Jay Heaton and her morbid secret ability. While the sixteen-year-old is confused by her new feelings for her best friend since childhood, she is more disturbed by her “power” to sense dead bodies—or at least those that have been murdered. Since she was a little girl, she has felt the echoes the dead leave behind in the world . . . and the imprints that attach to their killers.

Violet has never considered her strange talent to be a gift; it mostly just led her to find dead birds her cat had tired of playing with. But now that a serial killer has begun terrorizing her small town, and the echoes of the local girls he’s claimed haunt her daily, she realizes she might be the only person who can stop him.

Despite his fierce protectiveness over her, Jay reluctantly agrees to help Violet on her quest to find the murderer—and Violet is unnerved to find herself hoping that Jay’s intentions are much more than friendly. But even as she’s falling intensely in love, Violet is getting closer and closer to discovering a killer . . . and becoming his prey herself.
